Learn About Us
“Celebrating 10 Years of Empowering Youth through the Sheriff’s Youth Academy”
This year, we’re proud to mark the 10th Anniversary of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Youth Academy! For the past decade, this program has been at the heart of our mission to educate and inspire the youth in our community, offering them an unparalleled opportunity to gain insight into the everyday functions and training involved in law enforcement.
It’s important to note that the Youth Academy is NOT a boot camp for troubled youth. Instead, it is a dynamic program designed for students who are curious about a career in law enforcement or simply eager to learn more about this critical field.
Held each summer at the Cumberland County Community Complex, the academy is organized by grade level and provides a full week of immersive learning. Breakfast and lunch are served daily, and classes run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., ensuring that participants are well-supported throughout the day.
Our curriculum is both hands-on and comprehensive, giving students the chance to engage in activities and scenarios such as:
-
Responding to Crisis Situations,
-
Defensive Tactics,
-
Handcuffing,
-
Patrol Procedures,
-
Traffic Enforcement,
-
Criminal Investigations and Crime Scene Processing,
-
K-9 Unit Demonstrations,
-
S.W.A.T. Tactics, and
-
An Overview of the Criminal Justice System.
As we celebrate this incredible 10-Year Anniversary, we reflect on the profound impact the Sheriff’s Youth Academy has had on our students, our community, and the bonds we’ve built over the years. Here’s to the next decade of inspiring young leaders and fostering trust and understanding between law enforcement and the youth of Cumberland County!
